While the CEO of the Phoenix Suns, and the anchormen over at CNN and ESPN are busy coming out of the closet, it seems the transgender community wants in on the action as well.
Popular blogger Janet Mock, who also works as an editor at People.com, and the co-host of the podcast The Missing Piece, reveals in her new memoir that she is in fact a transgender woman. She sat down with journey writer Kierna Mayo from Marie Claire and shared her journey and personal struggles to become the person she is today.
After high school graduation, many of my classmates were throwing big graduation parties and buying new cars. Those kids went looking for good times and great memories, but I was desperately searching for one thing only: a chance to be in the right body for the first time in my entire life.
Two weeks after the surgery, I was in class at the University of Hawaii, finally focusing on something other than my gender. Four years later, I left Hawaii, a beautiful, confident woman armed with a journalism degree and bound for graduate school and a career in New York City.
Not only is congratulations in order for Janet, but what I love about this story is that as a trans woman there's someone in a position of power that doesn't have to resort to the strerotype that all trans women are good for is the porn business and becoming prostitutes. You can be in the right body and be whatever you want to be, warts and all. Never forget to dream big and work hard to achieve it no matter the circumstance.
