ARE THE TABLES FINALLY TURNING ON BEYONCE?
Way back when Lady Gaga started becoming a bit too overexposed and she started dropping new songs that didn't continue the pop genius of The Fame era, many asked if everyone was beginning to turn on her (Entertainment Weekly asked this same question after the backlash of Born This Way and Judas vs. Madonna's entire Blonde Ambition back catalogue). Well according to a recent article in U.K. tabloid The Sun, now it seems the tables are about to turn on the queen of swagger-jacking Beyonce.
Not too long ago Beyonce performed and took money from Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, appearing in blackface during a French photoshoot, and is often busted for taking writing credit on songs she never pens. For some reason people just dist it off their shoulders like Bey can do no wrong. That is, until she unleashed the worst song in pop history since The Macarena you know that here one second and gone the next single Who Run The World (Girls). After only three weeks of release, the single currently sits at No. 138 on iTunes which makes it the worst performing song in Beyonce's single charting history. It also doesn't help that last Monday at the Met gala in New York City she wore a gown she could barely walk in and was booed for not stopping long enough to allow photographers to take her picture.
Beyonce is also pissing off alot of other people because her recent publicity stunt for promoting her upcoming and unnecessary fourth album is to perform at a couple of music festivals, which means all those other artists like for example Foo Fighters or 30 Seconds to Mars, who don't make their bread and butter doing ginormous arenas with back-up dancers, a gazillion props and 50 custume changes have to share the main stage with Bey because she's the bigger star. It just seems to me that she's trying to copy off of Lady Gaga, who pulled the same stint of performing at small festivals while also doing arena-sized venues when she was on the come up but the only difference is Gaga is more believable as a rock star than Beyonce is. Gaga's not afraid to get down and dirty with her fans. Beyonce seems more interested in whether or not her diva fan will pop on at the right moment.
What's worse is that her husband Jay Z has groomed Rihanna to the point where she surpasses his wife as the artist to watch. Now I'm not saying RiRi is the better performer (because Bey is not afraid to give you show), but while Beyonce was busy laying out on 50 foot yachts and workign her minions to death to conjure her up some new ideas for a new album, Rihanna's been busy snatching pop crowns and taking names. It also doesn't hurt that Rihanna is years younger and willing to play the industry power game as well as give the media what they want, while Beyonce is known for having a highly guarded personal life.
I also think ever since Rihanna recovered from her notorious beatdown from ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, people began to relate to her. I know Beyonce says she was going to open up herself in her album I Am...Sasha Fierce, but everytime I listen to that record I still wonder at one point does she get personal? Beyonce, with her expensive lace fronts and trips to San Tropez just isn't relateable. Yes the gays love her because she looks like a over polished drag queen and yes the women love her because she can unleash a female empowerment anthem at the drop of a hat (except for her current single which everyone is hating). But after a while people become excruciatingly bored and like Jay Z says they're "on to the next one."
So the question remains can Beyonce get her career back on track and turn the opinions of her naysayers around on it's ugly head? Or is it becoming apparent that ever since she dropped her father Matthew as her manager the seams are starting to come apart from it's highly expensive couture gown? Or should Beyonce have just pulled a Justin Timberlake and step away from the pop spotlight and focus on an acting career? Unless she can release a new single quickly, we can't say for sure until not only we hear new music and see the Who Run The World music video but we see how the album performs when it drops in June.
