WATCH: JAMES DUKE MASON TALKS TRAILBLAZER CAMPAIGN FOR OPENLY GAY ARTISTS
I got into a huge debate on Facebook yesterday when New York City drag artist Cherry Jubilee and artist Penny Arcade went on a rant about how gays are so caught up in the phenomenon of Lady Gaga. As I got into it with a DJ/Gaga worshipper, I stated my opinion about why is it that we put so much energy into these straight pop divas who align themselves with our cause because they know gays not only have a disposeable income, but they are also a very loyal bunch, but we don't put the same energy into our openly gay singers? Myself and a pal of mine SIRPAUL began a long positive convo about this. There are so many talented gay artists who need our support and recognition, but it never happens because we continue to look to the straight media to validate our self-worth. We need to be out there creating the magazines, movies, and albums without looking to the Britney's and Madonna's for support. We need to stop looking to Lady Gaga to help us pass DADT/marriage equality because she's the hottest thing on the market right now and this is a cause that is as chic as adopting a Malawian baby.
So not 24 hours after I put this very question out into the universe
James Duke Mason, the son of singer Belinda Carlisle is starting a new campaign called "Trailblazers" which he says will help create a more accepting environment for openly gay entertainers in Hollywood so that eventually we might have our very own 'Sidney Poitier', our own trailblazer who breaks the barrier for LGBT people.
Duke says he has commitments from Chad Allen, David Moretti, Perez Hilton, and Mike Manning to create videos for the campaign, and talks about it in a clip to posted to his YouTube account. You can check out the clip above. In the meantime if there's any way I can be apart of this as well I'm definitely down because more than anything I am ready to kick in the door of Hollywood so that many artists especially those who are talented but afraid to love who they love in fear of their career hitting an iceberg can work, live and love freely.
