SONGWRITER HEATHER BRIGHT DEFENDS BRITNEY FOR HER HONEST SONGWRITING APPROACH

Yesterday I posted a story about singer/songwriter Heather Bright, who has written many songs for your favorite celebrities including Usher, Justin Bieber, and Britney Spears, who's track Trouble For Me is on Britbot's Femme Fatale album. In a recent interview Heather blew the lid off of a few people she has worked with who try to pass off like they write some of your favorite songs, buti n fact they try to sell you an illusion so that they look cool in the eyes of their ditzy stans. Heather felt the need to defend Britney against her shady critics, who is often criticized for not writing any of her songs.

Says Heather via her personal blog:

The media is talking trash about how Britney didn’t write any of the songs on her album… HELLO! Wake up everybody! NONE OF THESE ARTISTS WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS!!!!!! (there are a few exceptions… lady gaga, will.i.am/BEP, chris brown is starting to write a lot of his own stuff…ummmm… and now I’m running out of artists). Anyway… here’s my thing… and I feel VERY passionate about this issue. Britney could have come to me, like all these other A-list artists, and said…

“Hey, you wanna be on my album? I’m gonna need writing credit for that song AND part of your publishing even though I didn’t write anything! And then I’m gonna go on tour and gross $150 million in ticket sales and not give you any of that, even though I’m performing your song!”

I could rattle off a laundry list of artists who I’ve had that conversation with! And I’m on the other end like… “Oh okay… so you wanna rape me, but just with the tip?!” *Prince side eye* Britney’s one of the few artists I’ve worked with who didn’t try to take something that wasn’t hers. In my experience, from a business standpoint, her entire team is nothing less than a bonafide class act! If I ever have another song that she wants and another artist happens to want the same song… Britney will get it EVERYTIME! Why? Because she’s honest! And she treats her writers and producers with respect and dignity. An artist is nothing without a hit song… and a hit song is nothing without the right artist. It looks like the question I posed earlier just found its answer… maybe this is why 12 years later she’s STILL at the top!

Say what you want about Britney (and I often due due to the fact that she doesn't sing live and barely breaks a choreographed sweat), but I do applaud Britbot and the few artists out there who are honest in the fact that they don't write their own songs. Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and even Jennifer Hudson don't write their own songs - should they be crucified because they aren't songwriters - or does Britney get the short end of the stick because she's a superstar with marginal talent? People and these so-called thieving celebrities (Kanye, Beyonce, Rihanna, Lesbieber, etc.) need to learn that it takes a village to create the magic these performers run with for the year and a half they promote their latest album, so to not be honest about the help you received in the studio is just wrong. This is also why I don't understand why someone at Justin Bieber's age even needs a record deal? What the hell does a 17-year-old know about love and making mistakes, especially since they are in a business that thrives on perfection?

I'm sorry but as someone who thrives on keeping it real, I rather work with honest people than deal with a bunch of fucking snakes in the grass - and believe me, there's plenty slithering around in this industry. As I have said many times before it's okay if you don't write your own songs. Ifyou have an idea and there's someone out there who can take your idea and turn it into a song, why not go that route? That way it will be a much-deserved songwriting credit. This taking 20% of someone's work and passing it off as your own is just plain thievery and it's shit like that that pisses me off.
