KELLY ROWLAND GOING BACK TO HER R&B ROOTS ON NEW ALBUM

Kelly Noooooooooo! After whipping her hair back and forth in regards of finding the right tone of her third album (will it be dance? or R&B), it looks as if KRow is returning to her R&B roots on her new album. Her reason for returning to her R&B roots is because while Commander was a huge hit overseas (after all Europeans audiences are more open minded than American audiences) American audiences didn't take too kindly to Kelly exploring the dance genre. Here's what Rico Love, who not only wrote Commander but also has a hand in bulk of the album with Kelly had to say to Rap-Up about her album.

“‘Commander’ overseas was the No. 1 dance record and No. 1 in airplay, so it did very well in other countries,” the hitmaker tells Rap-Up.com. “They didn’t release it here in the States officially. But I think ‘Motivation’ speaks to her core fans. It’s soul, it’s sexual, it’s Kelly kinda taking a stance and being a lot more sexual and emotional like the Kelly [her fans] fell in love with.”

As for those like myself who are afraid that Kelly wil take a step backwards in mediocre R&B territory and abandon the once sound that made her finally stand out from all the rest, Rico says fans need not worry that KRow's album  will express both her classy and sassy side.

“I think it’s a good collaboration of both,” Rico shares. “I want to make sure we’re clear that there’s no indecisiveness or scatterbrained type of vibe. Being an artist, what happens is you start going through different things and you start enjoying different parts of your life and start reminiscing and remembering, and that’s what the studio experience is about… Sometimes you start here and end up here, but that’s where the music takes you. I think it’s gonna be leaning toward the urban rhythmic side.”

And while there's no distinct knowledge of what will make the final cut, Rico is confident that a reggae-tinged track he wrote called “Love Is the Greatest,” will make the final cut.

“I did that with Salaam Remi,” he reveals. “It just feels so good. It showcases her vocals. I take pride in vocals and I take pride in producing vocals and pulling out the best vocals I can out of all the artists I work with. To me, the artist is the instrument. So if I’m writing a melody and coming up with an idea, I have to make sure I coach [an artist] and push them to a level where everybody singing the song believes it. Every time you hear Kelly sing a song, you should feel like she wrote it because she means it that much.”

Can't wait to hear the album. I'm really hoping Universal/Motown will unleash two versions of this album. I really like the dance side of Kelly, and I feel her label needs to release a deluxe edition of the album that will include more of the dancey stuff that I know her European audience will get more of. I don't get why she would go back to R&B when her first two solo albums were of the same genre (and both albums didn't necessarily fly off the charts). Trust me Kelly, you need to stop pushing your music towards the urban audience who most likely will be buying your album on bootleg or downloading it illegally instead of actually supporting you.
