AVALON'S REVIEW: SCREAM 4

I just got back from seeing Scream 4 in the movie theater, and might I say i was quite thrilled with the movie. I'm going to keep my review short ans sweet because I don't want to go too into the film as to give away any surprises (like some assholes will on Twitter). I was glad to see the old gang return for one more go-round like Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gail Weathers Riley (Courteney Cox-Arquette) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette). The movie within a movie schtick kept me on my toes throughout (especially the killer opening, which rivals the 15 minute sequence most memorably played by Drew Barrymore), but what I did find annoying is the script got so wrapped up in throwing off the audience, by the time we got to the final killer (or ers) reveal, the film became too clever for it's own good.

Scream 4 takes place 11 years after the brutal killings and mommy incidents of Scream 3. On the last date of her self-help book tour, Sidney stops in Woodsboro to promote her book which is when all the killings start up again. Sidney helps bring the killer to justice with the help of Dewey and Gale, and also tries to keep her cousin Jill (Emma Roberts) and her new batch of friends safe, which, of course, you know they eventually become ripe for the killing.

I will say this - I enjoyed the plot of the film, as in how the media tends to disregard veteran stars (famous or infamous) after a few years to bring in what's new, now and next as well as Hollywood's laziness with remakes and sequels. Hopefully this film will shine a light on this need for most people who want to be famous for no reason, as well as opens up Hollywood to greenlighting original horror movie ideas. Hard to take such an idea seriously coming from a film that plays as a sequel/reboot of sorts. So I say all in all, not as good as the first Scream, but definitely an upgrade from Scream 3.
