Village Voice columnist Michael Musto is reporting that the always hilarious Whoopi Goldberg, who was at a press event for Broadway's upcoming Broadway musical Sister Act let the cat out of the bag that she is working on a documentary about Jackie "Moms" Mabley. For those not in the know she was a legendary comic who started out on the chitlins circuit, but rose to fame on variety shows of the 60s and '70s such as Rowan and Martin, Flip Wilson, and the Smothers Brothers. Ballsy and always hilarious, she often performed her act sans teeth. Musto, who is a huge fan of Moms also noted that Whoopi asked him to appear in the doc.
Well, at a press event for Broadway's Sister Act musical yesterday, producer Whoopi Goldberg told me she'd like me to appear in a documentary she's doing about Moms. Yes there are alot of funny ladies such as Mo'Nique, Som'more, Adele Givens, Cheryl Underwood, Whoopi Goldberg, and Wanda Sykes who everyone knows about, and have been quite successful over the past few decades, but if there was anyone out there who deserves the documentary treatment it's definitely Moms Mabley.
