STUDIOS IN BIDDING WAR OVER LIVE ACTION VOLTRON FILM
After the success of two Transformers movies and it's upcoming summer threequel, major studios are currently in a bidding war to bring the hit 80's cartoon series Voltron to the big screen. Vulture is reporting that that a number of studios are vying for the rights and are interested in developing the robot-series for the big screen.
Voltron's post-apocalyptic tale takes place in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron, defense against would-be invaders.
At one time Atlas Entertainment was interested in taking on the film, and one company now interested in obtaining the rights is said to be Relativity Media (responsible for a great deal of genre fare, including two of my favorite movies Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Zombieland, among many others). The article also suggest that Relativity could team with Paramount, the studio behind the similarly-themed Transformers franchise.
As long as they can have it out in time for it's 30th anniversary in 2014, and they keep Michael Bay's tainted hands away from this future franchise, I'm all in. This has the opportunity to be a great screen film if they would do the right thing and have TV writers tackle the human heart of the film and write some good dialogue. or have the director of Cloverfield try his hand at making Voltron. he did a great job with Cloverfield, but can redeem himself from the disaster of I Am Number Four. Or maybe this would be a perfect project for James Cameron to take on since he's always at the forefront of creating new technology for film. But he might be too busy with the sequel to Avatar to want to take on such a task.
