BOYS IN THE BAND RETURN WITH NEW DOCUMENTARY MAKING THE BOYS

I have older gay friends who swear by this movie word for word. Being that it was way before my time on this planet, I never got the brilliance of it - I could only see it for all the self-loathing and bitchiness amongst friends. But then again, I do have a soft spot for The Broken Hearts Club, which I feel is a more mainstream version of BITB which came out when I was a teen. As I got ond enough to understand, what I thought as self-loathing and irritating turned out to be groundbreaking, thoughtful, serious, well-written, brilliantly-acted, and way before it's time. Boys, the 1970 William Freidkin film which is based on Mart Crowley's landmark play and came out years before the Stonewall riots. It's been over forty years, and now there's reason to celebrate with the release of the documentary "Making the Boys," which premiered Monday night at the Tribeca Screening Room in New York City. Crowley revealed for the first time the inspiration behind creating Boys. "I have to be very honest. You know where that idea came from? I can say it now that she's dead. I always heard that (a man) was sent to Ginger Rogers as a present. … That's where the seed of that idea came from, and oddly it was heterosexual and not homosexual at all."

Just like my older gay friends opened my eyes by introducing me to Boys In The Band, I hope the documentary will do the same for the new generation of kids, who's only recollection of gay history is what's shown on Glee and 90210. The film will be released in select theaters this Friday and later this year on DVD. In the meantime, check out the trailer for Making The Boys as well as the panel discussion below...
