WORLD PREMIERE: LADY GAGA - BORN THIS WAY
Okay bitches, it's finally here! The world premiere of Lady Gaga's brand spankin' new single Born This Way that she was dying for everyone to hear. Maybe you've already heard (or didn't), but Gaga's already getting alot of flak for ripping off the sleeve to Kylie Minogue's 2007 single, 2 Hearts. Besides the rip-off sleeve, I'm happy to say that BTW sounds nothing like the 70's disco hit I Was Born This Way, because if you ask me, it sounds like an overhyped hot mess. I have to agree with other bloggers that it reminds me too much of Madonna's Express Yourself, if it were written by a 10-year-old confused transsexual. Like Britney's Hold It Against Me, I hope the video is better than the song. Also like HIAM it may not be innovative and something we haven't heard before, but guaranteed this will be another big #1 hit for the singer. I'd go in further breaking down the track to the bone, but James St. James said it best when he gave his opinion based on the pretentious lyrics she released a week ago.
Says James St. James: Below are the lyrics to Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," the anthem she has written for all the LGBT teens out there, her beloved "little monsters." I hate it already. A gay anthem, whether it's "I Will Survive" or "The Man That Got Away" or "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going," BECOMES a gay anthem because we find ourselves empathizing with the singer's passion or pain or exuberance. It's the realization that their pain is our pain too, that their joy is our joy etc. It's that our commonality has brought us together. It's ALMOST NEVER because it was written FOR GAY MEN TO HELP GAY MEN DEAL WITH BEING GAY MEN. That's just cynical and obvious. It's like bit like Susan Sontag's explanation of "pure camp" being something that strives for greatness but fails spectacularly, while "contrived camp" is something that intentionally sets out to be bad and cannot, therefore, be as satisfying. Gaga here isn't allowing us the choice of deciding whether or not this song will be a gay anthem (like "Bad Romance"), she's TELLING US that it is, and that makes it somehow less pure and less satisfying. It's contrived. I haven't heard the melody yet, and although I'm sure it will be a foot-stomper, I already feel manipulated.
Amen and halleleu to that! I couldn't have said it myself. So while we wait for the video and the live Grammy performance on Sunday, and for Gaga to appear on stage with a dress made from the foreskin of 1000 cholo babies, put your ass smelling paws up and listen to the Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow-produced Born This Way and the Liam Keegan remix below...
