WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH KELLY ROWLAND'S NEW ALBUM?
The moment I heard Kelly Rowland belt out the biggest dance single of her career When Love Takes Over, I said to myself 'finally she has managed to find a sound that will help her stand out from international superstar/former DC singing mate Beyonce." back in '09 WLTO was the beggest song all over the world and garnered Kelly the respect she was long overdue. Then she came out with a dance single of her own called Commander over the summer and the moment I saw her perform Commander at the Winter Music Conference, I really started to see her confidence as the Donna Summer of the new decade come out in full force. But once the video came out something went wrong. The Commander video was cheap looking, uninspired and looked like it was scraps left over from Janet's Feedback and Kylie's Can't Get You Out of My Head video sets. Then her label Universal/Motown started releasing these mediocre, dated mid-tempo R&B tracks that caused most of us to turn away from her last two abysmal solo albums. Rose Colored Glasses and Grown Ass Woman were apparent missteps and clearly Kelly was born to dance, but her label has yet to see her full potential and kept dropping the ball.
Then she released her second David Guetta produced single Forever and a Day, but a cheesy tweeny pop music video and poor promotion forced the single to disappear in a blink of an eye. After her past singles failed to ignite interest on the charts, it seems her label has basically turned their backs on Kelly's third album, because I have not been hearing anything regarding her new music - until now.
Via Kelly's website: I just wanna first start off by telling you all thank you SO much for being incredibly patient in waiting for the album. The making of this album has been an emotional roller coaster but empowering for me, which you will hear once it’s all done. I’m just taking my time to make sure it’s everything I want it to be. Just an FYI, it is shaping up beautifully!
So what can Kelly do to get her career back on track? I say continue to do more work with David Guetta (who brings out the best in Kelly whenever they work together), and collaborate with Darkchild, who surprised the hell out of me with his hot production on Dirty Money's latest single I Hate That You Love Me, or an edgy electro-pop producer like Klas Ahlund. Leave Tricky Stewart alone because he as well as Dream couldn't sell records for Mariah Carey and Ciara. Who do you guys think KRow should work with on her new album? I'm all out of options and like I said before she truly comes alive when she sings to a ferosh dance beat. Maybe I need to be her A&R?
