FANTASIA TO PLAY MAHALIA JACKSON IN BIOPIC
With all the talk about who will play Aretha Franklin in her forthcoming biopic, word on the street is that singer/ Broadway's The Color Purple star Fantasia will play Mahalia Jackson in a biopic of the late, iconic gospel singer. The screenplay will be adapted from Mahalia's autobiography, Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel. With Mary J. Blige set to play Nina Simone (whenever they can finally get that movie rolling) and my picks Jennifer Hudson and Glee's Amber Riley hopefully in the forefront to play Aretha, it looks like an exciting year for real singers playing iconic ones. I'm also hoping since Tasia told her family she was moving to L.A. for film roles, that they will document the making of the movie for her hit VH1 reality show.
The film, which will be directed by Euzhan Palcy will start shooting in April in Pittsburgh and Chicago and is slated for a December release.
