CIARA PERFORMS "RIDE" AND "GIMME DAT" ON MO'NIQUE; TALKS POOR ALBUM SALES
Wow Mo'Nique's horrible ass late night talk show is still on? Anyways, Ciara continued her Johnny Come Lately promotion rounds of her latest album Basic Instinct, and after chatting a bit with comic/actress/host Mo'Nique, she also performed her latest singles "Gimme Dat" and "Ride", the video that was deemed too sexual to air on BET (aka the Negro Network). Ciara also talked to the L.A. Times about the poor debut sales of her latest album, which didn't even debut in the top 10. Since Basic Instinct dropped last week, the album has so far sold 38,000 which is CiCi's poorest Billboard debut ever.
About her album sales:
“When you think about first week [sales] and performance, you don’t really think about that because I’m in this for the long run,” she points out. “I’m in this to build a brand, I’m in this to one day hopefully be known as a solid touring act. That’s the ultimate goal, and there are so many other factors that you have to put into play when it comes to being an artist. And it allows me to be in a positive place.”
On her fans's negative response to the Basic Instinct promotion:
“You know what? Its so funny. [I’m doing] an Internet fast where I don’t see what exactly is being said when it comes time to promo because I am just getting started,” she said. “And a lot of things that happen behind the scenes, honestly, one day I’ll be able to share with my fans that I don’t necessarily say. However, I do hear what my fans say and it’s exciting to know I have a solid fan base and it’s exciting to have people that rock with me, no matter what.”
“I did see a few comments and I said, ‘You know what? I one day look forward to being able to share with my fans (things that happen).’ Right now, this is about living in a world of possibility and doing my best,” she maintains. “Getting the record out there, I just want my fans to hear it. This album is really for my fans, and it’s good to know the energy and the feedback has been great. It really is just the beginning.”
For the first time in Ciara's career I actually believe her that she's interested in staying around for decades to come, instead of being some manufactured pop star who releases a slew of guaranteed hits every year. I just wish CiCi would show some sense of humanity instead of always coming across like some well trained robot we can't seem to figure out. I'm not saying release a sex tape for some attention, but she comes across as someone void of personality. You don't need to act like Beyonce and rehearse all your answers. Also since Ciara's performance aesthetic reminds me so much of Janet Jackson and the late Aaliyah, I wish she would have done some songs on her new album with Timbaland or Bangladesh instead of giving all the control to The Dream and Tricky. While there are some songs on the album that are good, the fans truly love Ciara when she's giving us those hot club bangas. I really think working with hotter producers would have taken her to the next level. If she were listening to her fans she'd know that. Save the corny ballads and mid-tempo shit for JLo. Sassy dance tunes and sexy mid-tempo tracks like Ride is what you need to be doing. For your next album do some R&B with some edgy and sexy electro flavor thrown in, like your debut single "Goodies."
There's also some artists with albums out that are worse than Ciara's, yet the labels push for the consumers to purchase their music. Even if they didn't believe in the product, they should still give her the promotion she needs. The first bad sign was when they allowed her the bidget to promote her new album the week it came out intstead of giving her a few weeks earlier to promote her music.
