BEYONCE ON NIGHTLINE; TALKS SASHA FIERCE FOLLOW-UP
Global superstar Beyonce has been keeping pretty busy as of late, launching a clothing line with her mother at Kohls, promoting her I Am...Tour DVD and working on a new album. Recently she spilled the T regarding creating her own genre of music for the new album, incorporating live instruments and more uptempo percussions. Recently she spoke to MTV about taking all the styles of music that inspires her from her favorite artists to incorporate into the sound of her new album
“Well, I wouldn’t say I’m inventing a new genre,” she said. “I’m mixing every type of genre that I love and I’m inspired by every type of genre. I’m not in a box,” she said. “It’s not R&B. It’s not typically pop. It’s not rock. It’s just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music.”
Beyonce, who's husband was a co-producer on the Broadway play Fela, says she was inspired by his Afro-Carribean sounds as well as many past artists who use live intrumentation in their music. “Definitely Fela Kuti, the Stylistics. How random, right?” she laughed. “So many people … Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, of course, Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall … all of those things I’m kind of mixing together.”
I find it rather interesting that she's talking about borrowing from other artists for her new album, which is pretty much what she's done throughout her career. It's just now she's not trying to hide it anymore, most recently when she talked about stealing from some artists when she performed Ring The Alarm at the MTV VMA's back in '06. I'm sorry I don't care what people say, but I truly feel Solange is the musical risk taker of the family. beyonce has always played it safe musically and it wasn't until she collaborated with Lady Gaga that she stopped acting so self-conscious. I Am..Sasha Fierce was a hot ass uneven mess and I'm hoping this record will be as phenomenal as they're trying ot make it out to be.
