This is why I say it's much better to take a DIY approach to your music. Word on the street is that Columbia plan to take control over MGMT's sound on their next album, after they were disappointed with the sales of their last album, CONGRATULATIONS. It all started when MGMT didn't know how to deal with their mainstream success after their debut album ORACULAR SPECTACULAR hit it big beyond their hipster audience. When they began work on sophomore album CONGRATULATIONS (which was released in April 2010), they decided to go into a completely different direction in order to gain the respect of their indie hipster audience. While the songs were innovative and out of this world, they didn't fit the crossover appeal that the majors are looking for.
I feel if you are tied to a major label, you don't really have much of a say in how you can construct your album. You also can't control how many people buy your record. As long as you stay true to yourself, who cares what other people think. i remember catching an interview recently with Linkin park where they were talking about experimenting with their sound, and they had an issue with their label because they wanted the entire album to flow into one another as one single, which would have made it hard for the company to promote individually. They compromised, and you can actually purchase two different versions of the album.
As for MGMT's next record, how about merging both worlds? Make some songs that appeal to the hipster audience, and create some indie, psychedelic songs that have a poppier appeal that will pleas the record label. That way everyone wins and you at least get some of your songs on the record.
