Some great news for Underworld fans. Kate Beckinsale will reprise her role as Death Dealer Selene in the fourth sequel in the Underworld franchise.
The last time we got an Underworld film was in 2009 with Rhona Mitra and Michael Sheen, which told the origin story of vampire Sonja (daughter of Viktor) falling in love with lycan Lucian. That film went on to gross over $100 million worldwide. John Hlavin wrote the script, but word on the street is that J. Michael Straczynski (Changeling, World War Z) has been doing rewrites.
I would have thought Len Wiseman, who helmed Underworld and Underworld:Evolution (as well as the awesome series premiere episode of Hawaii 5-0) would be on board as director of the fourth film (as well as throw in some input on the script), but it looks like he will not be directing the next film. Instead, Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi, and series co-creator Len Wiseman (director of the first two installments) are producing.
There's also word that casting directors are looking for a young woman to play Selene's daughter, which means the fourth entry will continue the storyline of Underworld: Evolution. Shooting begins next March in Vancouver for a January 2012 release.
