With my favorite summer shows may officially be coming to an end this week (with The Gates, True Blood, The Closure, Leverage, Rizzoli & Isles and basically every hit drama on TNT), it's out with the old in in with the new blood on your favorite networks. Here are a few of my choices of freah meat you should check out as well as some old acquaintances paying a visit this season that I feel you should set your DVR's for.
1) Hawaii 5-O - While I wasn't evel born yet when this show was on TV, I have to say the reboot looks as exciting as the series premiere of CSI ten years ago. With Entourage's Scott Caan, Battlestar Gallactica's Grace Park and Lost's Daniel Dae Kim in the cast. But action sequences aside, if the very sexy Alex O' Laughlin getting wet and shirtless in the series premiere (loved you on the short-lived Moonlight, but I def forgive you for that shitty JLo romcom) isn't enough to get the gays to tune in, well I don't know what to tell you. (Mondays at 10 pm on CBS)
2) The Event - The very sexy Jason Ritter, who I actually liked playing Lauren Graham's boytoy on Parenthood (he also happened to be her teenaged daughter's teacher) gets his Jack Bauer on as he searches for his missing girlfriend (andsome answers) in the new political serialized drama The Event. Blair Underwood plays the president and ER's Laura Innes and Zeljko Ivanek (Damages, Royal Pains) also star. The show is being run by Evan katz, who created 24 so if you like a bit of conspiracy with your espionage, definitely a show you should check out.
3) Chase - Annie Frost, played by Kelli Giddish (All My Children, Past Life) leads a band of U.S. Marshalls into the dangerous world of nabbing bad guys, kicking their fugitive ass, and taking names. Also starring Amaury Nolasco (Prison Break) as Marco Martinez, Cole Hauser as Jimmy Godfrey, Rose Rollins (The L Word) as Daisy Ogbaa, and Jesse Metcalfe (Desperate Housewives) as Luke Watson.
4) No Ordinary Family - After the bad tast left in fanboys mouths regarding the mess that was Heroes, ABC is hoping for some nerd love with their new series, No Ordinary Family, which I would describe as Heroes meets The Incredibles. Michael Chiklis (The Shield) plays Jim Powell, the patriarch of a family that mysteriously develops super powers during a family vacation. Jim gains the power of superhuman strength, his wife Stephanie played by Julie Benz (Dexter, Desperate Housewives) develops super speed. Their children Daphne (played by Summerland's Kay Panabaker, younger sister of Danielle) can read minds, while JJ and (Star Trek's Jimmy Bennett) is a genius. While Heroes focused on being a serialized drama told in chapters, NOF will focus it's core message on an ordinary family with extraordinary abilities. No Ordinary Family, which is executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Brothers & Sisters) premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 8pm on ABC
5)Undercovers - I am a huge fan of espionage movies and television shows. While I am a bit disappointed with the first season of USA's Covert Affairs, I am hoping since the show will be back next year that it will get better with not only more action, but someone please teach Annie Walker how to fight. As for spy couple Steven & Samantha, I don't think we have to worry about these two lovebirds taking care of themselves. The show, which I would describe as Hart to Hart-meets-Mr. & Mrs. Smith is about husband and wife caterers who are drawn back into the world of espionage after a friend of theirs is kidnapped. It isn't until they go on this exciting but dangerous adventure that it ignites a spark that's been missing in their marriage. Steven and Samantha are played by the very sexy Boris Kidjoe (Soul Foos, Resident Evil: Afterlife) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Undercovers is also making history as the first time two black actors are headlining a romantic action series. So I hope in this new era where we are inspiring change, that people will give this show a chance. Oh, and I'm sure having JJ Abrams on board should be a big help and elevate the series beyond what he could do with Alias. (Wednesday, September 22 on NBC)
6) Law & Order: Los Angeles - While I am still saddened over the cancellation of the original long running series, any way they can jar some juice into this franchise is all right with me. This time the cases leave the big apple and head straight to the city of angels. Among the regulars cast on the series include Skeet Ulrich (Scream), Terrence Howard (Iron Man), and Alfred Molina (Spider Man 2). Expect some ripped from the headlines celebrity cases, as well as some non-celebritard cases as well. (Wednesday, Sept. 29 on NBC)
7) Nikita - Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard, Priest) plays the titled assassin in the fourth reboot of the hit 90's French action film (Bridget Fonda starred in the horrible remake "Point of No Return, and Peta Wilson starred in the USA cable remake). This time she has long escaped The Division and her sole purpose is to take the people who made her who she is down into the pits of hell. The pilot, which aired last week after The Vampire Diaries did not disappoint on the twists and action. Maggie definitely holds her own as an action star (since this is besically what she does). Anytime we can get Melinda Clarke on TV is a definite plus, but I feel the people in casting made a big mistake with Shane West as Michael. I'm not buying his tough guys schtick for one second and putting a little peach fuzz on your face is not going to change that. otherwise, great show so far. (Thursdays at 9pm on CW)
8) Boardwalk Empire - Wasn't entirely enthused about this show in the beginning, but with all the buzz surrounding it, and the more clips I've seen, this show has definitely made it as a top priority for me to check out. Boardwalk Empire which chronicles the birth and corruption of Atlantic City in the 1920's stars some pretty big names such as Michael Pitt, Steve Buscemi, Michael Shannon, and Gretchen Moll. I've also heard HBO has put some big money down on this show (a reported $65 million to be exact), so they are really banking on this show to succeed. With some great character actors in the cast, and alot of money put into the sets, I'm ready to be transported to an era of a time gone by. (Sunday, September 19 on HBO)
9) The Walking Dead - I can't blog about this show enough. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist) has adapted Robert Kirkland's popular graphic novel into a six-part series about a cop who gets shot but wakes up in the hospital during a zombie apocolypse. Heand a band of others try to survive in a world overrun by the undead while he searches for his missing wife and son. (Sunday, october 31 on AMC)
10) Returning Favorites:
Chuck - Linda Hamilton joins the cast as Chuck's mom. need I say more? (Sept 20 on NBC)
The Real Housewives of Atlanta - NeNe, Kim and dem other girls of ATL try their best to upstage all the drama cooked up by their sisters from NJ and NYC. Oh, and two new housewives join the cast (model Cynthia Bailey and entertainment attorney Phaedra Parks) while an original cast member (Lisa Wu)says good-bye. (Monday, October 4th at 9pm on Bravo)
Parenthood - Get ready for another drama filled season with the Braverman clan. Sarah Braverman (Lauren Grahan) gets a paid internship at her brother Adam's (Peter Krause) shoe company after coming up with a great idea. She also gets caught up in a tangled relationship with William Baldwin and the very busy Kevin Alejandro, both who work for Adam. Crosby Braverman (Dax Shephard) tries to make his long-distance relationship with actress girlfriend Jasmine (Joy Bryant) and their son Jabbar (Tyree Brown) work. Lawyer Julia Braverman (Erika Christensen) considers having another baby which doesn't sit well with stay-at-home dad Joel (Sam Jaeger), and matriarch Camille (Bonnie Bedelia) goes to couples counseling to work on her marriage to patriarch Zeek (Craig T. Nelson). September 14 on NBC
Glee - expect tributes to Madonna, R.R.M., Britney, and the Rock Horror Picture Show as well as Jay Z & Alicia Keys (Empire State of Mind). (September 21 on Fox)
V - The aliens will invade once again when the show returns in November on ABC.
The Middle - While I do enjoy seeing the eldest Heck in his underwear, my favorite on the show is youngest son Brick (Atticus Shaffer). Expect to see Doris Roberts as Brick's teacher (insert Everybody Loves Raymond joke here). (Sept 22 on ABC)
America's Next Tired Tranny (Cycle 15) - With a high fashion makeover, Tyra promises this season will be the one that will make or break a supermodel as well as launch them into the next Naomi Campbell. With Yaya DaCosta being the only one with a legitimate career (as an actress, no less) that remains to be seen. (Premiered Sept 8)
Law & Order: SVU - The biggest hit of the L&O franchise kicks off it's 12th season with Paula Patton (Precious) joining the cast as the new ADA, Detective Benson finally gets a man ( played by Lost's Henry Ian Cusick), but what you need to look out for is a powerful performance by Joan Cusack as a woman who tries to makeover her foster child into the image of her kidnapped biological child. L&O: SVU is actually my favorite of the series, and wnenever this show comes on USA I still get sucked up in the marathons. (Sept. 22 on NBC)
Hell's Kitchen - Chef Gordon Ramsay gears up to throw more food and scream obsenities at aspiring chefs in the eighth season of this hit franchise that will promise the winner a high profile chef job. (Sept 22)
The Vampire Diaries - The second season heats up as vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore try to deal with the evil troublemaker Katherine returning to Mystic Falls. Tyler will learn more aboutthe family werewolf curse, and Bonnie dives further into the world of witchcraft. Oh, and in the final moments a major cast member was killed off. (Premiered Sept. 9)
Fringe - The third season will explore the two alternate worlds even firther, since FBI agant Olivia Dunham is currently trapped in a parallel universe, while her genetic doppelganger is impersonating her in the real world. Epect alt-Olivia to work cases with Walter and his son Peter (John Noble and Joshua Jackson, respectively), while the real Olivia will investigate some bizarre cases with alt-Broyles (Lance Reddick) and alt-Charlie (Kirk Acevedo). (Sept 23 on Fox)
Human Target - The kinks that troubled season 1 are gone, and Matt Miller (Chuck), has taken over showrunner duties which follows Mark Valley as an assassin who helps those in need. Chi McBride and Jackie Earl Haley return while Janet Mongomery (Entourage) joins the cast as a thief. (Oct. 1)
Medium - Eldest daughter Ariel heads off to college at Dartmouth, and psychic medium Alison DuBois decides to finally finish getting her law degree. (Sept 24)
Smallville - Some old favorites such as Jonathan Kent (John Schneider), James Marsders (Brainiac), and Lara Vandervoort (Kara/Supergirl) return for the 10th and final season. Alison Mack (Chloe) will appear only in a handful of episodes, but there's no word on if Kristin Kreuk and Michael Rosenbaum will return. Fingers crossed. (Sept 24 at 8pm on CW)
Supernatural - The series picks up one year later after stopping the demon apocolypse and Dean (Jenses Ackles), who has been playing house with girlfriend Lisa and her son Ben discovers that his presumed dead brother Sam (Jared Padalecki), who you remember was sucked in hell in the finale is in fact alive. So where can the show go after such a spectacular season? The Sixth season will explore the world of vampires, werewolves, fairies, and leprecahuns. For the St. patrick's Day episode I presume?
Dexter - Fans of the series were shocked when Dexter returned home in the show's final moments to get ready for his vacation with his wife to find his son Harrison crying in a pool of blood and Rita's dead body in the tub just after he got finished decapitating her killer (John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer). Dexter will find his moral code tempted when he not only deals with the guilt surrounding Rita's death, but has to raise his newborn son as well as his stepchildren as a single dad. He develops a bizarre connection with Lauren (played by Julia Stiles), and we'll be introduced to an eccentric loner Boyd (played by Southland's Shawn Hatosy), a new take charge female cop Cira (April Lee Hernandez), Johnny Lee Miller (Eli Stone) as a life coach (hopefully not as wacky as Famke Janssen on Nip/Tuck) and Peter Weller (RoboCop) as a mentor to shady cop Quinn (Desmond Harrington). (Sept. 26 on SHO)
Desperate Housewives - Mark Moses, who stirred up plenty of drama in season 1 of DH returns to wreck havok on Wisteria Lane, Gaby & Bree's friendship is tested after Bree admits to Gaby that her son Andrew accidentally killed Carlos' mother, Susan and Mike try to make it work in their new crappy apartment after facing foreclosure, and the sassy Vanessa Williams (who single-handedly jarred my interest in this series once again) joins the cast at the fifth housewife. I understand she was tied up in doing Ugly Betty, but I believe if you're going to bring black people into Wisteria Lane, she should have been first choice over Alfre Woodard (Sept. 26)
Brother's and Sisters - With Emily VanCamp leaving the show and Balthazar Getty and Rob Lowe not returning, expect some drastic changes in the new season. The show takes place one year later after the highway collision that injure many of the Walker clan and killed Kitty's senator husband. Justin returns from Afghanistan less annoying, Kitty gets a new man, Sarah's tries to cope with french boyfriend Luc's (Gilles Marini) new career as Marky Mark circa his 90's Calvin Klein days, gay couple Kevin and Scotty take in a troubled teen, and matriarch Nora not only nabs a new gig as a radio host, but a new man as well. (Sept. 26)
CSI: Miami - With Eddie Cibrian gone and Adam Rodriguez returning full-time (his other gig at Ugly Betty is no more), expect alot of high octane drama and action in the upcoming season including a prison break that brings Delko and Horatio face-to-face with the show's most memorable villains.
