So yesterday I sat and watched the two hour episode of Law & Order:SVU where in the first hour Kathy Griffin played a lesbian activist. While I am a fan of both the show and Kathy's stand-up (as well as her D List reality show), I can't help but feel a little uneasy after watching it. Why was it that all the hype surrounding Kathy's kiss with Det. Olivia Benson was non-existant, but her kiss with Det. Stabler left in? I couldn't help but feel the writers making it seem like lesbians were aggressive hatemongers with penis envy and predatory towards other women. While there are some women that feel that stereotype, not all fall into that category. What most watching the show probably don't know, is that there were two different versions shot of the kiss. one had Kathy's character kissing Mariska Hargitay. Another had her attempting to kiss Det. Benson with Benson quickly pulling away with protests that she was straight. Then with her shift change, she warned the other female officer to stay outside, insinuating that Kathy's character might try to turn her out as well. Then they threw in the twist that she was secretly seeing a man, having her go from a lesbian to bisexual. While overall it was a good episode (minus my little complaints), this had me wondering did the same writers who had Elizabeth Hasselback (not how the View co-host spells har last name) as a rape victim a few years back write this episode? I would think with B.D. Wong on the show as an openly gay Psychologist would have you guys writing less homophobic parts. The second half with Mischa Barton playing a pregnant prostitute who survived getting killed by a bible-thumping maniac, played by OZ's Lee Tergesen (loved the interrogation scene between Tergesen and Christopher Meloni, who played his lover on the hit HBO series)fared as a much-better episode. Overall with the shit going down with the Tonight Show, SNL, the Olimpics (mispelled on purpose) and the 10 pm line-up, NBC needs to die a horrible death like UPN and the WB.
