Michelangelo Signorile had GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios on his Sirius OutQ radio show yesterday, and of course Signorile did not avoid the elephant in the room and asked Barrios about the pass they gave to ABC about their blatant homophobia against Adam Lambert's AMA performance. A few weeks ago, I posted the three different statements they made regarding ABC's double-standard.
After Signorile's interview with Barrios, he took to his blog to write this letter:
After the Barrios appearance, Signorile wrote took to his blog: Barrios came into the studio to sit down with me and sincerely wanted to clear the air. He accepted responsibility for what happened and admitted that the group’s first update after ABC banned Lambert from two more shows was problematic, attributing it to a lack of clarity. But I still believe the explanations given weren’t adequate — and judging from the callers to the show afterward, many people agree — and that GLAAD is still not taking a forceful stand. Nor do I believe, as I told Barrios, that the decision by The View to book Lambert for a taped segment Thursday was a “partial victory,” as he called it, since he’s still banned from shows they had dumped him from.

Overall I think GLAAD has a long way to go in explaining what happened here and also its larger mission. It is compromised by the fact that it takes money from ABC –something else we discussed — and that it just doesn’t seem to be at the forefront of controversies and defamation, more so focused on giving out awards and patting media on the back.
In my opinion you can't change people's hearts and minds by acting like we have the body parts of barbie and Ken dolls. Yes we are sexual, but that's not all we are. Barrios backpedaled a bit, and we all know the reason they didn't go too hard on ABC is because they take money from them. If you've watched any of ABC's representation of gay people (and the lack of the recurring gay characters used on Desperate Housewives), you'd see why they like many so-called organizations that are supposed to be for our benefit take handouts. Don't expect a HUGE victory with Glambert appearing on The View. First of all, I feel it being taped yesterday to be shown today is an insult because mainstream artists whether you are gay, or black will achieve major success if you can be controlled by straight white media. Adam is a rock star who is comfortable with his sexuality. If he makes you uncomfortable, change the channel and don't buy his music. GLAAD did to Adam Lambert what Justin Timberlake did to Janet jackson when he revealed her titty at the Super Bowl. they abandoned ship when they were needed most (I should mention that in the recent issue of Entertainment Weekly, JT did admit he was wrong and wished he would have been there more for Janet when the media crucified her when a black boob was exposed to "white America").
