LGBTQ HIGH SCHOOL LAUNCHES ONLINE

David Glick, the first online learning coordinator at the Minnesota Department of Education, has launched a first-of-its-kind online high school for GLBTQ youth, TwinCities.com reports:

"The online nature of the school allows it to reach young people wherever they have Internet access — especially in rural areas, whose smaller populations makes a physical version of his school impossible, Glick said. It also removes gay students from potentially hostile school environments and places them in what he touts as a 'safe and welcoming educational community.' Instead of facing bullies every day, students would be learning with other students who understand their concerns."

Glick is planning to "open the doors" of the school in January. The tuition will be $5900 for one year. Glick says 50 students will be needed to launch it, and 24 are already signed up. 100 have applied for staff positions.

While I am happy a school like this exists, I can't help but feel a bit uneasy about it at the same time. I think online schooling is harder than being in a classroom. Who do you go to when you have an academic problem if your relatives have no rememberance of what you're learning. It also makes it that all gays will be removed from regualr schools, and then high schools will be dull and boring. Why not create a school like we have in New York which would be the Harvey Milk school? That way like-minded students can be around other teens like them as well as get the academic help they will need. I guess I'll just have to see how this all comes together before I can start trying to figure everything out.
