I have been a fan of America's Best Dance Crew since season one, when my husband Rainan and his group the Jabbawockeez took home the first trophy. I've also loved watching groups of families (which is what they all are since they spend so much time together) come together and battle it out everyweek on this show, which celebrates dance to the fullest. I had often wondered why haven't we seen any gay underground voguing groups on this show? I actually thought maybe MTV wasn't ready to bring something so groundbreaking to the mainstream. Well bitches, that's all about to change since NYC is about to take over with two amazing groups from the Bronx. But let's talk about one NYC group that is not afraid to bring fierceness to the dancefloor. Vogue Evolution, is the LGBT group about to take the mainstream world by storm and I am living for it! I'm sure we've had gay dancers incorporated in some of the groups of ABDC's past, but Vogue Evolution are the first group to not only turn it out, but to be out as well. And just think they only assembled their group last year.
Yes voguing has been around since before speech replaced sign language, from the legendary Willi Ninja to Madonna bringing it to the mainstream. But truth be told, Madonna just worked the vogue style to best suit her. the children weren't doing duck walks or pop/slamming in her video. I remember a few months ago I was saying to a friend of mine 'how come we don't have a dance competition show featuring gay dance groups battling it out, kind of like the underground balls,' and he said to me 'because it wouldn't work for TV.' I had to think long and hard about it, but in my deepest of hearts I feel he's wrong. Maybe he was saying that because he felt mainstream America (meaning the folks in Cupcake Idaho) aren't ready for something this different. While most get their information from television (don't think there are any balls in West Bubblefuck, Arkansas), I have come to realize when you present something in a positive light, people are willing to open not only their eyes to something deffierent, but their hearts as well. America did show their love for Fanny Pack (even though they didn't win) so maybe they will show their love for Vogue Evolution. Can't wait for Sunday's episode when they do a tribute to Beyonce. you know VE is gonna kill it because you know how much the gays liiiiiive for Vogue Evolution. The following is via their myspace page:
Via their MySpace page: "Assembled in early 2008, Vogue Evolution aims to be in the forefront of bringing vogue and house/ball culture to main stream media. Vogue Evolution comprises of some of New York’s most respected and creative figures in the House/Ballroom scene...Vogue Evolution has since moved beyond just a dance company to become an envoy that stands committed to effectively changing the lives of the LGBT community through the art of dance. Vogue Evolution works to empower Black and Latino gay youth around self-value, while educating the community on HIV/AIDS awareness, and encouraging the importance of getting tested now."
Y'all better werk! I truly feel this is our time as gay people, and we seriously need to bring it to the masses like it needs to be brought! P.S. I am seriously Living for transgendered performer Leyomi. Watch their ABDC audition below:
