With the controversy regarding The Advocate putting Perez Hilton on the cover, I wonder what the reaction will be to Bruno on Out's August 2009 cover? It's an interesting comparison in that it represents another subject whose image has been argued to reflect either positively or negatively on LGBT people. I think these days since magazines are fighing hard to keep up with the fast-paced internet, a little controversy never hurt nobody.
"Yes, he is puerile, offensive, and utterly inappropriate, but so what?" writes Editor-in-Chief Aaron Hicklin. "The same has been said of Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Joan Rivers, and Sarah Silverman, comic geniuses all, whose humor rests on having the balls to say 'boo' to the ghost in the room."
The ghost being homophobia.
Bruno (and not his creator, Sacha Baron Cohen) was interviewed for his feature by Mo Rocca, offering some of the same one-liners he tried out on Matt Lauer this morning on Today, like, "Did you know zat not one suicide bomber has ever blown zemselves up wearing Marc Jacobs?"
