KRIS AVALON'S 2009 BET AWARDS RECAP

While the BET Awards was ghetto as usual, but there were some highlights as well. The show opened with New Edition paying tribute to Michael Jackson. They were a bit pitchy in the beginning, but towards the end they found their voice. I wonder if they had to put crack on the stage like breadcrumbs to get Bobby Brown on stage? The best performances of the night include Ne*Yo, Keri Hilson, Mary Mary, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Jamie Foxx.

Drake, who performed his hit with Lil Wayne really needs to prove himself. He's getting so much praise right now, the pressure's definitely on. His performance last night was lackluster to say the least. He just sat on a stool and did his rhyme. Did he injure himself or something? That's my only explanation for him sitting while performing. Speaking of Beyonce, her performance of Ave Maria did bring a tear to my eye. It's very rare for the princess of no personality to tug at my black heartstrings but she almost did it. I also liked Keri Hilson's performance, although she should have stopped after she did her little dance to Kanye saying "who's bad/real bad/Michael Jackson."

The moment I heard Michael Jackson passed (and the BET Awards were airing in a few days), I immediately thought about what kind of tribute they were going to put together. I thought they would get all the black artists of the younger and older generation to pay tribute to his classic hits, such as Usher, Omarion, Chris Brown, and Ginuwine. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. i heard Chris brown was supposed to perform last night (which would have been the perfect time for a comeback), but word on the street is that Beyonce (through Matthew, I'm sure) and Jay Z put out the word that if Chris performed last night, they wouldn't perform. It's so nice to see Jay coveting his artist as much as he does RiRi and I love how Bey continues to play the doting wife.

The tribute to the O-Jays brought tears to my eyes (I forgot that Tyrese can saaaang), and it has definitely been a while since we've all seen Tevin Campbell (how you doin?) but the moment that had me gagging was an emotional Janet Jackson (who looked fabulous), made her first public appearance since her brother’s death where she made a brief yet heartfelt speech on behalf of her family, thanking fans for all their love and support. What pissed me off though was Joe Jackson (the original Matthew Knowles), bringing his demonic ass to the BET Awards. We all know the crazy shit you put your son through. This heifer had the NEEEEERVE to get on TV and talk about his upcoming projects rather than keeping his ass home and dealing with his family and helping his children deal with the death of MJ.
