Rihanna finally made her triumphant return to the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “The Model as Muse” gala on Monday night. Wearing a daringly different Dolce & Gabbana puff-sleeve men’s suit and tie, Ri, alongside pal Kanye West, proceeded to wow guests like Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady, Kate Beckinsale, Kate Moss and the Olsen twins with duet performances of “Umbrella” and “RoboCop.” Many celebrities were more than happy to welcome Rihanna back to their ranks. “I loved the performance,” designer Rachel Roy told us after the ball at the Modelina OrphanAid party. “I think every woman stood up and cheered for Rihanna. We’re happy to support her, and we want her to rock.” She added, Rihanna “wore really strong shoulders in her outfit, which could be a metaphor, but I may be reading into it a bit much.” Andy Roddick’s new wife, Brooklyn Decker, seconded the motion. “The real prize of the night was the amazing performance by Rihanna and Kanye,” she said.
Apparently, Vogue editrix Anna Wintour agrees. At an intimate after-party at Graydon Carter’s new joint, Monkey Bar, she and Ri appeared as thick as thieves. Says one eyewitness, “Anna was telling Rihanna how great she was. It looks like someone may be ending up on the pages of Vogue in the very near future!” In addition to a potential Vogue cover, the pop princess’ musical career is also flourishing: she’s landed four nominations for the 2009 Urban Music Awards, including Best Female Act and Artist of the Year. But not all the celebrities made a big deal out of Rihanna’s return. Says our spy, “Aside from chatting to Anna and Kanye, no one really bothered her. They were just letting her be.” Also on hand at the Monkey Bar fete were Billy and Katie Lee Joel, who made a united, hand-holding front in the wake of rumors that Katie has been stepping out with designer Yigal Azrouel. “Bride Wars” co-stars Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson put rivalry rumors to rest by gossiping in a corner all evening. And Madonna, whose late arrival at the Met was trumped by Rihanna’s entrance, spent her evening seductively dancing with at least five men — including Kanye — all while glaring at fellow A-Rod ex Bethenny Frankel.
As for Rihanna, she capped off her night the right way: with friends. The songbird retreated to the Amy Sacco- and Harvey Weinstein-hosted Met after-party at Bungalow 8to kick back in comfort with new best pal Katy Perry.
