Maybe this is the reason why he turned down Footloose? After months of rumors, it's finally been confirmed that "High School Musical" star Zac Efron has signed on to play the title role in Warner Bros.' planned live-action version of the popular '60s Hanna-Barbera cartoon show Jonny Quest.
L.A. Times' "Hero Complex" got the confirmation but mentions that Warner Bros. have been considering changing the name of the property to avoid the inevitably negative comparisons to Warner Bros.' flop Speed Racer, another live action movie based on a popular cartoon.
I think if they have good writers and don't follow the same formula as Speed, they will have a successful film. What does Johnny Quest have to do with Speed Racer? Speed Racer was just a cheesy, over-the-top film with no convincing acting, fight and action sequences. I actually thought Zac would have been a more convincing Speed Racer than Emile Hirsch, but I guess Zac being from High School Musical he wasn't hot enough. Emile, while an amazing young actor (in the same vein as Joseph Gordon-Levitt) was wrong for this role. If they follow the formula of the original series (which was very homoerotic, mind you) and can bring something different to the film, i will be there to see it in theaters like Star Trek and Wolverine.

There's no word on who might be directing although previous rumors have pegged the team of Andy Fickman and Dwayne Johnson possibly reuniting for the third time after the recent Race to Witch Mountain.
