Based on the exclusive photos from J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek movie, I'm actually curious to seewhat he does withthe film. i will admit, I'm not a hardcore trekker like my dad and my friend Eric. i'm still learning a bit of the Trek lore and lingo. I've seen all the movies (Wrath of Khan and First Contact are my faves), and I watched The Next Generation when I had the chance.

So lets get to the actual news here. The recent issue of Entertainment Weekly got an exclusive look at scenes from the Star Trek movie and got to talk with director JJ Abrams. Photos of Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as a very angry, Sylar-ish Spock, and the rest of the USS Enterprises’ young crew were leaked as well.

The Enterprise Crew (Anton Yelchin as Checkov, Chris Pine as Kirk, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as Bones McCoy, John Cho as Sulu and Zoe Saldana as Uhura).
Some likes: If Spock is going to be getting angry and laying down the vulcan death grip, then it affirms that Quinto was just right. Seeing him in full costume is affirming as well, as he looks great. Eric Bana also looks very menacing as Nero.

I'm not too sure about Chris Pine as Kirk though. Zachary Quinto is spot on as Spock, and Zoe Saldana is a perfect choice as Uhura. i don't know. Chris Pine doesn't look like captain material to me. I will say this though: JJ is great with casting with his choices of Jennifer Garner on Alias, Keri Russell on Felicity and Mia Korv on Fringe. I have faith that JJ will do this movie justice.

Here is a plot summary of the upcoming film, so if you don't want to know anything, skp to the next paragraph. Star Trek's time travel plot is set in motion when a Federation starship, the USS Kelvin, is attacked by a vicious Romulan (Eric Bana) desperately seeking one of the film's heroes. From there, the film then brings Kirk and Spock center stage and tracks the origins of their friendship and how they became officers aboard the Enterprise. In fact, the film shows how the whole crew came together. The adventure stretches from Earth to Vulcan, and yes, it does find a way to have Leonard Nimoy appearing in scenes opposite one of the actors featured on the EW cover - or maybe both.

I'm sure people will be expecting the Gene Roddenberry lore in this film (which they will get). What JJ has also said is that he's also making a film for action fans as well. If you try to only cater to a specific audience, you won't be able to grow the series. And for a series that has basically turned into a punch line (thanks Enterprise, Galaxy Quest and Star Trek: Nemesis), the series can use all the rebooting it can get.
Star Trek hits theaters on May 8, 2009.
What do you think of the first look images from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek?

My Name's in print!! Just like Edna Ferber!!!!!!!
What is Gene Roddenberry lore?? I mean Star Trek has always been a combination of cerebral and action - no disrespect to JJ on that.
at the time of the beginning, Spock was somewhat angry - if it can be called that - again - no problems with JJ on that. The casting is pretty good as well, since JJ did speak to the actors who originally portrayed these characters when he was casting, again - no wonder they're all spot on.
As for the plot - I personally have had enough of the time travel thing - Enterprise took it to a new high on the scale of ridiculousness - maybe that's why we don't see Rick Berman's name anywhere in this -
Let me not get started on that idiot!!
Anyway - all judgements will be reserved until I se the film - I'm sure it will be enjoyable. Its classic trek!!
In closing, I think this will compliment James Cawley's vision of Star Trek - Star Trek Phase II
As Captain Kirk once told Mr. Scott
"Young minds; Fresh Ideas. Be tolerant."
I liiiive for the Edna Ferber line. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing the movie and will save any judgements until after I've seen it. JJ has done a pretty good job when it comes to resurrecting fledgling series (Mission: Impossibel 3 anyone?)so I have absolutefaith that he will do a good job on the film. I also forgot to mention, Bob Orci, one of the two writers he always collaborates with on television and film projects is a hard core Star Trek fan.
