Okay. I know all the blogs talked about the VMA's as soon as it went off last night and early this morning, but I didn't get a chance to watch it until late tonight (thank god for DVR right?). Well I have to say the 2008 MTV VMA's was a definite upgrade from previous awards shows. Performance wise, mostly everyone did a great job. I loved the Paramount lot concept where artists got to perform their songs as if they were doing a live music video. There was alot of hype on the show where there shouldn't have been. Let's talk about the worst moments, shall we? Britney looked great, but you can tell manager Larry Rudolph had her on a short leash (is she sipping the same Barley Water Zombie Katie's drinking?). Also her hyped appearance was just that. Hype. All she did was come out say a few words and leave. Best performance I've seen in a long time. I was a fan of the BLACKOUT cd (she definitely gave me tracks to work the pole to), but VIDEO OF THE YEAR for "PIECE OF ME?" Now that's blasphemy. "GIMME MORE" should have won VIDEO OF THE YEAR. That's up there with HEIDI MONDRAGQUEEN'S "OVERDOSIN" video as a musical & video masterpiece. Also, why are the Jonas Brothers famous? They should have been performing at the Republikkkan National convention rather than at the VMA's. All that promise ring talk and staying virgins until marriage made me want to stick my finger down my throat (been trying to stop that. I just started getting myself to enjoy food again) I kid the manorexics (I think). Host Russel Brand did make me laugh at times and when he kept picking on the Jonas Brothers, but overall Bland's material was just bland. You could tell he was playing it safe and didn't want to offend anyone. Makes perfect sense why boring ass Miss Piggy Jordin Sparks had to put in her two sense about sluts & promise rings, neck roll and all. Well maybe she and the Jonas Brothers can perform together at the next Republikkkan party, but when they do, perform to Sarah Palin's knocked up daughter and the boyfriend who stated on his MySpace page that he didn't want any kids. Now if that's not a great public service announcement for birth control, I don't know what is.
Performances:
Rihanna - FABULOUS! Turned it out by giving us Grace Jones realness with her opening performance of "Disturbia." I had no idea Chris Brown wrote that song for her. See, you learn somehing new everyday. She also turned it when she performed "Paper Chaser" with T.I. I just wish she relax and perform a little better. Sometimes when i watch Rihanna she seems a little stiff when she performs. When she did PC, she just stood in one spot and sang the chorus. Now if Mary J. was singing it, she would have been snapping her neck, jumping around all over the stage. other great performances loved P!nk's performance of "So What" (love the hair too), Christina Aguilera and her electro rendition of "Genie In A Bottle/Keeps Getting Better" was Toni Basil hot. I thought for a second I was watching Lady GaGa in Britney's Onyx Hotel outfit. Not really a big fan of Lil Wayne, but he definitely did his thing until that clown T Pain came out (speaking of, what the hell was that mess coming through the Paramount lot on an elephant. Plain ol' coonery and bafoonery). T Pain is definitely setting the black power movement back 500 years. There were so many things going on, it's hard to keep track of it all, but overall MTV is slowly getting back to getting it right as far as performances go. This fall is going to be filled with some great music.
