For quite some time I have heard talk of a tell all book in the works that threatens to expose the down-low world of hip hop artists. It was even alleged that Gay Rapper Caushun was going to write a tell all, but that idea was shut down faster than Khia's entire rap career. The author of the book, former MTV producer Terrance Dean, announced that he has sold Hiding in Hip-Hop: Confessions of a Down Low Brother in the Entertainment Industry to Atria recently. The book is now scheduled to hit store bookshelves this May.
Hiding in Hip-Hop we are told details "the author's life as a closeted homosexual working in the film and music industry and his relationships with other closeted homosexuals -- film stars, rap artists, and music producers... " Dean himself said "This book is filled with intrigue, sexy celebrity bed partners, abundance of drugs, and of course, the down low/gay men and celebrities in the entertainment industry."
Early reports indicate that the author will not actually name names but a spokesperson for the publishing company said "the real-life personas of down-low men that Dean describes in Hiding in Hip-Hop will be easy to decipher."
I hate to admit it but I am anxious for the release of this book. Hip-hop has always been one of the most homophobic industries in all of entertainment. Those tough street hard gay hating thug rappers must be shaking in their Timbz worried that their secret lives will be put on blast. Normally I would be opposed to disclosures such as these but when people spit words of hate against the very activity they routinely participate in then they need to be called out.
