Janet Jackson is honored for the support she's received from the gay community over the years and chalks up persistent rumors that she's a lesbian to her being a woman of "strength."
"I don't know," the 41-year-old singer mused to E! Online when asked why she and other women like Oprah Winfrey and Alicia Keys were perceived as gay. "Maybe they want to put something else behind it because of the strength. Like, you can't be a woman and be strong, and there has to be something else to it."
Jackson, who will be presented the Vanguard Award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance on Saturday, said she doesn't remember the first time she was asked if the rumors bothered her, but does recall her answer: "Why should it bother me?" She has been in a relationship with record producer Jermaine Dupri since 2004.

On being an icon in the gay community, Jackson said she "never thought" of herself like that. "It never even crossed my mind when people started calling me icon and legend and all this other stuff," she said.
Jackson, whose hits include "Miss You Much" and "Black Cat," also marvels at all her male fans that dress to the nines, master her moves and perform in drag shows across the country.
"They really study you," she said of the drag queens. "But you know, they pour it on more, which I absolutely love. They give more than I do and I love that."
One such performance, she said, had a motivating effect on her and her backup dancers.
"Afterward, I said to my dancers, 'We've gotta pull up because these bitches are hitting it. They're giving so much femininity and we look like boys onstage.' The next night we had a show and we were trying our hardest to ooze with that feminine touch."

The singer, like millions of other Americans, is keeping up with this year's increasingly heated presidential election, but is holding back on an endorsement.
"I kind of have an idea, but I am going to keep that to myself," she told E!. "I really haven't for sure said, 'This is it.' I'm swaying definitely one way more than the other.
She's had ten No. 1 hit singles, six chart-topping albums and a successful movie and TV career. So, is there anything left for Jackson to conquer?
"I would love to do a musical," she said. "I just want to do a musical that touches on everything—something that's funny and dramatic, but definitely a musical."
Oprah I would consider to be A Sexual (like your brother Michael). Alicia Keys on the other hand...need I say more. I know Janet is loved and she is very supportive of the gay community. I don't think she's gay at all. Janet to me is more of a freak. With freaks, all bets are off. We'll fuck anything with a pulse - within reason. Trust!
